[NaPoWriMo Poetry- 22] “Champaran 1917”

The Champaran Satyagraha of 1917 was the first satyagraha movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi against the Britishers during the Indian Independence Movement. It was a farmer’s uprising against the tinkathia system of indigo cultivation  that took place in Champaran district of Bihar, India.

Champaran was dyed in indigo.

Three of every twenty land planted indigo,

Three of every twenty peasants panted for justice.

Tinkathia , Tinkathia.

The peasant’s pale tired palms; indigo.

his starving child’s face; indigo.

An undying road to death, a burning agony.

Tinkathia , Tinkathia.

Mahatma, their saviour; disobedience, their means.

A fierce display of non violence and peace,

running chills down their oppressor.

Tinkathia , Tinkathia.
